A Walk In the Park is a fun book for preschool through 2nd grade children to read. It is a reading tool for parents andteachers to use. By using this book, parents and teachers can teach children to read for meaning and not just forpronunciation of words. Phonics is a wonderful tool for decoding words. However, it is not the only way childrenshould learn how to read. “A Walk In the Park” uses repetition which allows for the child to feel successful at reading andwill allow the child to acquire “sight” words. These are words such as I - went- to- the- park and many other words in thestory which the child will soon learn and will not have to slow down to pronounce. Acquiring sight words will increase thereaders speed and comprehension. This book can also be used to teach children how to count to ten, learn how the numbers are spelled, and that each numberaccounts for that particular number of items. At the end of the book there is a panoramic picture of the park which allowsthe child to interact with the book by finding and counting the correct number of each object in the park.Teachers may use “A Walk In the Park” as a model to develop additional learning activities. The students can create theirown books with new sight words or perhaps they can incorporate the alphabet and more numbers to their stories. Atthis crucial age of a child’s life, it is important for them to begin to feel successful at reading and to develop a love forreading.
